DEBRIEFING THE BOYS -->

November 12, 2006

it's official

I unhappily announce that I am, officially, at my ugliest state ever. Not only am I wearing dirty gross clothes, but I desperately need a haircut and a shave. But what really takes it over the edge is that I got hit in the face by a 2x4 with nails sticking out of it. Luckily it didn't loosen my teeth, but my lip currently looks like a big fat bloody booger. (I hope nobody is in the habit of eating while reading my blog...hehehe)

You know what's kinda cool, though? I am amazed at how the body heals itself. I didn't really have any way to take care of my face once it was hit except for a little sterile wipe thing. But my body just rallied and took care of it. It looks fucking disgusting, yes. But at least it's healing! I just find that amazing. This is not meant to be a religious discussion, but just as a tangent, I always come back to a belief in God (separate that from organized religion, please) because of the small things, like how good fruit tastes or how amazing the body is.

Anyway, you can tell from my scatter-brained-ness that I really need sleep badly. So I'm going to go do that.

Why did you get hit again? Hopefully it was some random accident and not someone purposefully hitting you...

Your healing, the good taste of fruits, etc. are all due to evolution. healing is obviously needed, and fruits taste good both because they're nutritious and full of energy, and because plants WANT it to taste good so that other organisms will disperse their seeds. No god there. In fact, think about all the things we SHOULD like but many people dislike, like asparagus, broccoli (I like broccoli... although there is a gene that allows people to taste the bitterness in broccoli, and that's why many people don't like it. ... there's more to the story- http://www.cbc.ca/technology/quirks-blog/2006/10/excuses_from_evolution.html ) back to it though... there are tons of nutritious foods we SHOULD like but most people don't, and there are tons of fatty, sugary, non-nutritious foods we SHOULDN'T like... or at least we should be able to stop wanting them when we've had enough. But nooo, we don't. Why not? not because there is some god playing tricks on us, but because of evolution.

Your god idea makes some predictions. We don't see those predictions, and many times we see just the opposite. I can go on and on about how badly "designed" we and many animals are, and how well built some animals are (like squid eyes, or bird lungs, etc...) which are far superior to their human counterparts.

Let me preface this by saying I'm not intending to be confrontational. I just find it interesting that two people can look at the same information and draw a vastly different conclusion.

I look at the human body and see how amazingly intricate its processes are and how the body just knows what is going on and how to fix it. Take the kidneys for example. They clean our entire blood volume more that twice as often as needed. As we age and lose some of the kidney function we still remain above what is needed because we have two kidneys. To me this speaks to planning above and beyond what evolution alone could accomplish.

It's almost a daily occurrence for me to look at the human body and think how I can't imagine anyone not believing in God by what they see. I realize this has a great deal to do with my past. I was raised believing in God so it is only natural for me perceive things that way more easily.

I think it is interesting to note that we both hold an incredible amount of faith in what we believe. There is really no definitive way to prove either side so we have to discuss thoughts, beliefs and intangibles. I just find the entire process incredibly interesting.

Okay, you do know that you are going to have to deliver a story on HOW in the world this happened. You can't say something like "I got hit in the face with a 2 x 4 with exposed nails" and leave us hanging. Oh yea, heal fast!!!

Okay, or you can look at such incidents in context. If you could even imagine the amount of "planning" that goes into creating a planet out of interstellar dust, you'd think the concept of the human body rather mundane - even a dead end in terms of efficiency. The more you know, the more you appreciate life for what it is, and not what you perceive it to be. That is both a blessing and a curse. If you're interested in wound healing, take a course in physiology.

"I look at the human body and see how amazingly intricate its processes are and how the body just knows what is going on and how to fix it. Take the kidneys for example."

If you look back at the comments in the age poll, you'll see that I have that same sense of awe too. There is nothing more amazing than life in the universe, and that is the reason why I going to college to become a biologist (and I'd like to get higher degrees in biology)

"To me this speaks to planning above and beyond what evolution alone could accomplish."

Sigh... this is a topic for a forum, not for the comments section. In short, evolution CAN accomplish things like that in small gradual steps (usually) over long periods of time. Life has had four BILLION years to evolve. Think about that number. I can't answer with anything specific because you didn't make a very specific point, (eg: how did this mechanism evolve? and this one?) you just looked at a very big picture. Evolution doesn't work by magically creating a kidney, it starts from individual cells and whatnot and it's only after hundreds of millions of years of natural selection that you get things as complex as kidneys.

"can't imagine anyone not believing in God by what they see. I realize this has a great deal to do with my past. I was raised believing in God so it is only natural for me perceive things that way more easily."

I used to believe in god. I used to be a catholic. I was born in mexico, where 90% of the population is catholic, I went to a catholic school, etc. But I am curious and love science, I don't just accept what others tell me or wonder about things without actually trying to figure out how they work or how they came to be. I even questioned evolution for a while. However, I soon realized that there is no evidence for god and that:

"I think it is interesting to note that we both hold an incredible amount of faith in what we believe. There is really no definitive way to prove either side so we have to discuss thoughts, beliefs and intangibles. I just find the entire process incredibly interesting."

I don't have faith. If it takes faith to believe it, I don't believe it. Evolution is a fact, it has been proven (at least as close to it as you can get in science). MORE THAN 99.99% of scientists in relevant fields (natural sciences) accept evolution, and with good reason to. The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. Beofore you say that evolution is "just a theory", consider the fact that the THEORY of gravity, the germ THEORY of disease, the atomic THEORY, and many other facts are theories too. A "theory" is what scientists call a fact (I'm oversimplifying of course). To quote Seth Lloyd, "Unlike mathematical theorems, scientific results can't be proved. They can only be tested again and again until only a fool would refuse to believe them."

To say you don't accept evolution is akin to saying you think the earth is flat.

So I guess I can stop whining that taking off my stage makeup dries my skin out? I realize you're sleeping and getting your pillow all dirty, but should we try to invent stories as to why Matt's face got mangled. I guess that he was building a house for Habitat for Humanity and one of teh cute construction workers was so distracted by Matt's biceps that he accidentally knocked a board loose that swung down and got him. No good deed...

I really hope you're being fescitious Matt that you got hit by a 2x4 (or using that as a way to describe how you look in relation to your lack of cleanliness). Well, you know what, sometimes we can't all look perfect, so it's all good! :D

For the record, I had nothing to do with the 2 x 4. I only mentioned stealing the batteries out of your sexy toys. On my blog...because I was jealous. (blush) Get well soon.

God! Don't you just hate it when a piercing goes wrong? Rule #1: When the technician comes in carrying a 2 x 4 with a nail in it, you've probably chosen the wrong place. Or you're in Berlin.

Hopefully it left some scaring. Minor scars on a guy's face can only add to the hotness.

I used to work with a group of women who swore that a scar on a guy's face would make them wet.

Of course the guy could not look like Quasi Moto but you get the drift.

So, now you'll have to tell us why you got hit in the face with a 2 x 4 and with nails in it no less! Hope you get healed soon, and keep eating that healthy food. It'll certainly help the body heal itself!
