uncle brother
I'm an uncle!!! My sister isn't due for another two weeks, so I wasn't expecting the call. But last night, just after 11, my mom called and said "This is it! Come on down to the hospital!" So I got dressed and set out. I was the first one of my family to arrive, since I live closest to my sister. My brother in law was there, of course, and was remarkably calm. The hospital room was really big, with a bathroom and couch and stuff. So there was plenty of room to just camp out.
Pretty soon after I arrived, the rest of the family showed up. And, as it turns out, even my grandma insisted on coming. But she's not really mobile, so she decided to just stay in the car and sleep until it was really time.
The contractions were kinda unsettling (more for my poor sister, I'm sure!!) It's weird to see somebody you're close to in pain. It's just so uncommon. But she was a trooper.
As these things sometimes go, it was a lot of "hurry up and wait." Eventually they made us all leave the room, because they were going to check out what was going on under the hood. And I most definitely did NOT want to see that. The hospital had a great cafeteria, so we did a lot of eating, a lot of People Magazine reading, and a lot of cat-napping.
It was really satisfying, around 4am, to email my boss and say "I'm not coming in to work today." You only get a few of those free passes, you know? Basically just when somebody is born or dies. Score!
Sometime after 6am, the real show started. The doctor made us leave the room again, but we just sat down in the hall outside the room so we could listen. But then a nurse came and shooed us away because we were a fire hazard. So we went away, and just my mom and sister went back to linger. The baby was born at 8:48am. A little girl! And she's perfect.
Apparently the first words she ever heard were my sister saying "OH SHIT!!!" Hahahahaha!!!
They got her all cleaned up and we went in to see her. It's an amazing thing to see a baby for the first time. Particularly one you'll be close to until the day you die. I kept thinking, "What will her first word be? What will her favorite subject be? Will she like to dance? Sing? Read? Act? Will she speak a foreign language? Will she have kids?" There's SO MUCH to look forward to! And it's amazing to think that she's completely unblemished. She has NEVER done anything wrong. Never made a poor choice. Never hurt someone (well, except my sister, but that doesn't count). Never had a sunburn. Never scraped her knee. She's brand new and perfect!
Everybody was cooing over how beautiful she is, but honestly, I don't see it. I mean, she looked kinda squished and discolored. But I guess that's normal. I'm just not used to newborn babies. I'll take their word for it that she's truly perfect. And she's healthy! And that's all that matters.
Hooray!!! What an exciting time! And her first cousin (my brother-in-law's sister's baby boy) was just born a month ago, also in LA. So they'll grow up together. How perfect! This is the first baby in our family, and we couldn't be more excited.
Since my sisters refer to me as "Brother", I'm going to be known as "Uncle Brother". Yay!!!

It's said that babies don't really "cute up" until several hours after birth, because they really are all kinda squished and discolored. That's normal, haha. But once they begin to "look" normal, then they usually become quite cute. :D
Congratulations!!
Matt,
When you hold her for the first time feel of her soft spot on top of her head, anterior fontanelle. It is quite large and diamond shape, and much tougher than you think. This flexible tissue allows the skull to deform under compression in the birth canal.
reading this i had a huge grin, thinking about when my 1st niece was born, almost 8 years ago, and ive seen/experienced/answered alot of the questions youve been thinking about, and i remember having those same questions about her. (well not literally the same questions, but i think you know what i mean) thanks for reminding me of a really truly beautiful moment in my life!
I'm a regular reader and extremely infrequent commenter, but your line "Never had a sunburn. Never scraped her knee" really touched me.
There are indescribable tears in my eyes right now. I thought of my own kids and their births as I read this. They are ten and five now, and they've had sunburns and skinned knees. I know what foods they love and what they hate. I know when I see a movie trailer which one of them will most want to see the movie. I know from the sound of their feet which one is coming up behind me.
I just fell a little more in love with my own kids because of this post.
Uncle Brother! That's the cutest thing ever!
And I too don't see why people always talk about how beautiful babies are... When my niece was born, she was quite an ugly baby... but I guess it wouldn't have been a good thing to say that out loud. hehe.
Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS on being an uncle!
So happy for you!
Reading your account, I relived my own sister's first baby being born - though I did stick around to see what was under the hood and what came out ;-)
Enjoy the day off!
This was a great post. My niece will be two this March, and I remember everything about her birth. Fortunately for you, you were there. I was in Arizona on a vacation when I got the text saying "Hi Uncle Jake!"
The whole part about her doing nothing wrong yet - I loved it. I never thought about it that way before, and it was really poetic.
Congrats on the new family member. I'm sure you'll love it.
I'm a new reader, btw. :)
Congrats! I just because an uncle for the first (and second) time in Aug/Sept. It's a little crazy, isn't it? Now I've got two little nephews and it's awesome watching them grow.
Congratulations. All I can say is that if you choose to have your own someday, the feelings of how happy and excited you are with your niece will pale in comparison to how excited and happy and scared and nervous you will be with your own.
Best to you, your sister, the rest of your family, but most of all, Welcome to the World little niece of Uncle Brother!
Oh, congratulations! I can't wait to be an uncle XD It seems very exciting.
Beautiful post. Congratulations Matt!!
Congratulations! I became a step-uncle in November. Is there such a thing? My sister had kids the smart way: she married into them.
Be kind and spoil her. And treat her like a person, not a child. She'll love you for it.
You are a Good Man Matt! You will be the best uncle!
So, Matt, that was clearly exciting and all, totally understandably, so maybe now you will give us an insight into the
(Dear_______) post, and what that was all about?
We care...at least I do...
yay! thats so awesome! congrats! =D
soo she's the one you're gonna spoil right? :) congrats!
That's really awesome! I remember my first time at uncledom -- it was a great feeling.
Congrats, Uncle Brother! :-)
Oh wow how wonderful for all of you, now you get to spoil her.
Being an uncle is great because you can work the kids all up and then take off. Noisy toys are the best gifts they will drive your sister and brother in law crazy.
cheers
